Problems with High School Education Public education has been a staple to American society since the mid nineteenth century. However, in the years since, the public school system has developed many flaws. The system that was originally created to enhance the lives of students and better society now causes much detriment. Although public education claims to be the â€Å"great equalizer† there are many problems ignored by school reform policies that hinder the learning of children. Income greatly impacts a child’s learning ability. In the United States, where a child attends school is based on where he or she lives, which is based upon the income of the family. Typically, families with lower income must send their children to poor†¦show more content†¦According to a new study from the University of California, Irvine, discoveries show that short term stress, even lasting as little as a few hours can damage brain cell communication. This can seriously affect a child’s capability to learn. A disconcerting fact that proves teens are feeling too much pressure is the number of teens who have admitted to cheating just to receive a good grade. As reported by The Berkeley Blog, ninety-five percent of high school juniors and seniors allege to cheating on a test before. If something is not done to lessen the stress on teens, the next generation will not be adequate citizens in today’s society. Teens are in great distress and even though many are meeting or exceeding standards, they are sacrificing their happiness to do so (Carter, 2). Furthermore, bullying can also be an obstacle to success. Not only does bullying affect the victim, it also affects the school, bystanders, and bully. Students who are bullied can acquire many physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach pains, and sleeping problems. They may also fear school and lose interest in it, which can lead to these students doing poorly academically. Students who are bullied can also lose self confidence in themselves and typically experience low self-esteem which can lead to violence and suicidal thoughts (Effects of Bullying on Students, 1).
